New composite insert targets fretting corrosion to simplify motor replacement, with no change to model number, price or lead time.
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Virginir -- Sumitomo Drive Technologies has introduced the Quill Bushing, a composite insert designed to prevent the potential for fretting corrosion between the motor shaft and quill bore on quill-input gearboxes. It is now factory installed as standard on eligible Cyclo®, Helical BuddyBox® (HBB) and Bevel BuddyBox® 4 (BBB4) NEMA-input gearboxes at no additional cost, with no change to model number, price or lead time.
Over time, small movements between the motor shaft and quill bore can cause fretting corrosion, making the motor difficult to separate from the gearbox and extending maintenance downtime. The Quill Bushing isolates the metal surfaces at the connection, so the motor can be removed more easily when service is required. It also removes the need to apply anti-seize paste to the motor shaft during assembly. A patent-pending retaining lever locks the insert in the quill shaft so it cannot back out during operation.

"Fretting corrosion is a common maintenance problem on quill-input gearboxes, especially in high-cycle conveyor applications," said Lia Maksyutova, Chief Product Manager, Sumitomo Drive Technologies. "Making the Quill Bushing standard gives customers easier motor replacement without any change to how they order."
Validated in testing and field operation
Internal R&D laboratory testing included:
In the field, test units have operated for three years at major parcel carrier facilities at about 400 starts per day and remain in service with no reported issues. No corrosion was found in testing or field operation.
Availability and motor-frame compatibility
The patent-pending Quill Bushing is standard on eligible hollow quill-input configurations across Cyclo®, Helical BuddyBox® (HBB) and Bevel BuddyBox® 4 (BBB4) NEMA-input gearboxes, covering Cyclo sizes 606 through 616 and NEMA motor frames 56C through 250TC.
