RICHMOND, Va. - Virginir -- The Brain Injury Association of Virginia, or BIAV, is the only statewide non-profit organization in Virginia dedicated exclusively to serving individuals with brain injury (BI), their families and those that care for and about them. They are the primary source of information and personal support for thousands of individuals, families and professionals living in Virginia whose lives have been touched by a life-altering, often devastating injury. The five pillars of BIAV are education, outreach, support, public awareness, and advocacy; BIAV served more than 22,000 Virginians in 2022 through their programming.
BIAV has developed a partnership with Sheltering Arms Institute (SAI). SAI has a 24-bed brain injury (BI) unit, as well as a stroke rehabilitation unit, and because these patients often require long term care after discharge, BIAV has developed a support network to assist patients and caregivers. BIAV is a SAI preferred community partner and launched a referral program in order to complement and enhance SAIs continuum of care, and to cultivate a stronger, more collaborative relationship between the organizations and those they serve. SAI's team refers patients to BIAV's staff during their stay through brochures and an introductory video. The BIAV Clinical Liaison works with patients, families, and SAI staff by holding office hours and making referrals for support groups, online channels, conferences, as well as educating on available resources and service providers, and participating in SAI-hosted programs for patients post-discharge.
