Pioneering Platforms Combine Strengths to Better Serve Aging Consumers, Families, and Professionals
RESTON, Va. - Virginir -- Under this new coordination, the two pioneering organizations—both dedicated to serving older adults, caregivers, and professionals for over three decades—will collaborate closely while preserving their distinct brands and identities.
Steve Gurney, founder of the Positive Aging Community and Positive Aging SourceBook, will work in close partnership with Gordon Hasenei, who has acquired The Beacon Newspapers from founders Stuart and Judy Rosenthal and now serves as its publisher and CEO.
"This coordination between the Positive Aging Community and The Beacon Newspapers represents one of the most significant developments in media and resources for the 50+ audience in our region since both platforms were launched over 30 years ago," said Steve Gurney. "By combining our trusted expertise, comprehensive directories, engaging content, podcasts, live discussions, and print publications, we will deliver even greater value to consumers, families, and organizations navigating aging, senior living, caregiving, and longevity in Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and beyond."

The Beacon Newspapers, founded in 1989 by Stuart and Judy Rosenthal, publishes three free monthly print editions reaching approximately 400,000 readers across Greater Washington, D.C., Greater Baltimore, and Howard County, Maryland. The publications offer award-winning original articles on health, finance, travel, senior living, local arts, and more, tailored to readers 50 and older, along with resource guides and free 50+ Expo events.
The Positive Aging Community, established by Steve Gurney in 1990 as Retirement Living SourceBook, produces the annual Positive Aging SourceBooks—two comprehensive guides covering senior living, aging-in-place, and related resources across Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. Gurney, who reacquired and rebranded the organization in 2019, also hosts weekly podcasts and live discussions featuring thought leaders on topics including memory care, caregiving, and innovative approaches to positive aging. With more than 35 years in the field, Gurney has been recognized by numerous organizations and has spoken widely on aging-related issues.

"I have deep admiration for what Stuart and Judy Rosenthal built with The Beacon over 37 years—a trusted, high-quality source of information and connection for older adults and their families," Gurney added. "We are honored to join forces with Gordon Hasenei as he leads this next chapter. Together, we will expand access to meaningful, reliable resources and create new opportunities for engagement with the fastest-growing demographic in the Mid-Atlantic."
The collaboration will launch with exciting initiatives in 2026, including a refreshed design for The Beacon's monthly newspapers to attract both longtime readers and new audiences interested in positive aging.
