RICHMOND, Va., June 26, 2024 ~ Markel, a leading insurance company under Markel Group Inc. (NYSE: MKL), has announced the appointment of Phil Schmidt as their new Chief Strategy Officer. Effective immediately, Schmidt will take on the role of leading Markel's Global Strategy team. He joined the company in October 2023 as a Managing Director and is based in Bermuda.

In his new position, Schmidt will be responsible for overseeing major strategic initiatives and corporate development activities across all of Markel's global operations. He will also work closely with the company's State National and Nephila divisions to address clients' complex risk management needs by utilizing their diverse platform of insurance, reinsurance, fronting, and insurance-linked securities.

According to Jeremy Noble, President of Markel, Schmidt brings a wealth of global and strategic experience to the role of Chief Strategy Officer. He also shares a strong alignment with Markel's people-driven culture, which is seen as a valuable asset by the company. Noble believes that Schmidt's leadership will keep Markel focused on achieving industry leadership and looks forward to working closely with him.

Prior to joining Markel, Schmidt served as Managing Director at Burg, an investment bank specializing in M&A, fundraising, and strategy consulting services. During his 13-year tenure at Burg, he held various positions of increasing responsibility including Chief Investment and Strategy Officer for Babbel AG and SVP of Strategy for Pearson PLC.

Schmidt holds degrees from the University of Freiburg and the University of Bedfordshire, as well as an MBA from London Business School. His extensive education and experience make him well-equipped to take on this new role at Markel.
