RICHMOND, Va. - Virginir -- The Brain Injury Association of Virginia, a statewide nonprofit who supports individuals, families, and professionals whose lives have been impacted by brain injury, today announced that Anne McDonnell, Executive Director, has decided to leave BIAV at the end of June 2023.
BIAV Board President, Bryan Meadows, said "It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) announce the resignation of Anne McDonnell, its Executive Director. Over the last 22 years, Anne has been instrumental in spearheading new initiatives to improve the lives of Virginians who have been impacted by brain injury. Her inspiring leadership has left not only left a lasting impression on the brain injury community, but a permanent legacy at BIAV. Anne's faith is clear and evident through her actions and by the grace that she has shown to not only those who have sustained a brain injury but also to their care givers."
During her tenure, Anne oversaw the growth of BIAV into an organization that is recognized as a national leader and serves as a role model for several other states; championed a significant growth in community based services for persons with brain injury; expanded BIAV programming and ensured the continuation of Camp Bruce McCoy; and led teams that won numerous awards, including the Alliance for Information and Referral Systems National Innovation Award and the National Excellence in Programs and Service Award from the Brain Injury Association of America in 2021.

"My work in this field has taught me so much, and I have had the great pleasure of meeting brilliant and dedicated clinicians and advocates. But the survivors and caregivers I have had the honor to serve are the ones who have inspired me, and kept me going; they have given more to me than I could ever give them. I am so proud of the work we have all accomplished together in improving the system of care for persons with brain injury in Virginia. I look forward to seeing a new Executive Director lead BIAV to new opportunities to provide help, hope and healing to those we serve" said Ms. McDonnell.
"We thank her for her years of remarkable service and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors; her enthusiasm and leadership will be deeply missed. A search has begun for her replacement, and we anticipate having the new ED in place by the spring of next year," said Meadows.
